How is AI Accelerating Great Selling Professionals — and Exposing Everyone Else?
OpenAI's release of ChatGPT Work — their latest Work Agent — isn't simply another AI announcement. It's a signal that professional work is changing. ChatGPT Work is designed to help people manage ambitious, multi-step projects by gathering context across applications, files, and workflows before producing meaningful work products. It moves AI beyond answering questions and toward helping professionals carry work forward.
It can prepare pre-call research, summarize meetings, update CRM records, identify stalled opportunities, draft personalized outreach, analyze target accounts, simulate buyer conversations, and surface insights from large amounts of information, all while keeping projects moving from one step to the next.
That matters because the next phase of AI won't be defined by who writes the cleverest prompt or generates the fastest answer. It will be defined by who uses AI to move meaningful work forward with greater clarity, superior judgment, deeper context, and disciplined execution.
For selling professionals, however, the bigger story isn't the technology. It's what the technology now demands of us.
The Bar Has Moved
Last week, I had the opportunity to present some of my research during a Carahsoft sales event hosted by Fred Diamond and the Institute for Effective Professional Selling (IEPS). The discussion centered on what is changing between buyers and sellers, and why many selling professionals haven't changed with it.
The central message was simple:
Modern selling is no longer about showing up, asking a few broad questions, and hoping the buyer tells you what matters.
Today's buyers arrive informed, connected, and risk-aware. They are evaluating far more than your solution; they're deciding whether your organization understands their world well enough to help them make a confident decision.
Preparation is no longer a differentiator. Preparation is the price of admission.
The real differentiator is what you do with that preparation:
Do you use AI to recognize the signals your buyer may not yet see? Do you use it to develop an informed point of view worth discussing? Do you use it to validate your thinking with the buyer instead of asking them to educate you? Do you use it to create clarity, confidence, and momentum that moves the relationship forward?
This is where AI begins separating professionals who think strategically from those who simply work faster.
AI can help prepare account intelligence, summarize industry trends, analyze conversations, identify gaps in discovery, and pressure-test your thinking.
It can also generate more generic outreach, shallow personalization, and activity disguised as progress. The tool does not determine the outcome. The discipline does.
Curiosity Still Matters, but Precision Matters More
Intellectual curiosity has always separated exceptional, high-performing selling professionals from their underperforming colleagues.
Today, AI magnifies that difference. Curiosity without preparation creates interesting conversations. Curiosity paired with disciplined preparation creates informed points of view. That's where meaningful buyer conversations begin.

That means leaving behind questions like...
“Tell me about your business.” “What keeps you up at night?” “Can you walk me through your priorities?”
My friend Kevin Carr, VP, CVENT recently stated that these types of questions demonstrate that a sales representative is unprepared to engage the client effectively. Reason being is that those questions are signals to a buyer that the seller is unprepared and uninterested in doing the work to serve them.
High-performing selling professionals engage clients differently:
"Kevin, before today's meeting we invested some time understanding what's changing around your business, not just inside it. We identified three external forces influencing organizations in your industry and noticed your leadership team has been speaking publicly about two of them. Before we discuss anything we do, I'd simply like to understand whether we're interpreting those signals correctly."
That approach — rooted in intellectual curiosity — changes the nature of the buyer / seller relationship as it...
Demonstrates an invested understanding, establishing immediate credibility and positioning the relationship as a collaborative partnership; not a sales transaction.
Invites the buyer to move beyond surface-level requirements and validate, challenge, or expand your point of view, creating a richer strategic dialogue.
Establishes trust with the buyer by demonstrating thoughtful preparation, making it easier for the buyer to introduce additional stakeholders with confidence that the conversation will be worthwhile.
Activity ≠ Momentum
One of the most common traps in sales is mistaking activity for momentum:
Make more calls Send more emails Engage more DMs Schedule more meetings Add more pipeline
None of those activities directly create Buyer Trust, Solution Confidence or Deal Momentum. Momentum happens when buyers receive value through the relevant interactions with selling professionals.
Did the buyer gain clarity? Did the Selling Professional tap into real funded urgency? Did the Selling Professional document how procurement decisions are made? Did the Selling Professional create a Joint Execution Plan [JEP]?
That's why I challenged attendees last week to retire one of the oldest phrases in complex selling environments.
"Always Be Closing" is outdated. Instead — "Always Advance Buyer Momentum" is more relevant today.
In complex sales, the goal is not to pressure the buyer into a decision. The goal is to help the buyer become more confident in the decision they need to make.
Buyer Confidence grows through clarity.
...It grows through relevance.
...It grows through proof.
...It grows through trust.
...It grows one meaningful step at a time.
ChatGPT Work Does Not Replace Judgment
ChatGPT Work is an important signal because it demonstrates how AI is evolving from an answering tool into a work partner.
That is a remarkable leap. But it also reveals something even more important:
AI can carry the work. It cannot replace professional judgment.
This is why the next era of AI-enabled selling will not reward lazy sellers. It will expose them.
The strongest professionals will use AI to sharpen their thinking, deepen their preparation, and improve every customer interaction. Average professionals will simply create more activity. The market doesn't need more noise. It needs more useful conversations between intellectually curious professionals.

Your Competitive Advantage Isn't AI
Your competitive advantage has never been the technology. It's how you think.
Can you recognize signals before your competitors?
Can you connect those signals into a meaningful point of view?
Can you validate that thinking with a customer?
Can you create enough trust and confidence that buyers will invite other stakeholders into the conversation?
AI can help you move faster. It can even help you prepare better. But only if you already possess the discipline to think before you prompt.
If you're responsible for revenue, the question isn't whether your team knows how to use AI. It's whether they know how to think with AI. One creates more activity. The other creates better judgment.
The New Competitive Advantage: Disciplined Thinking
For the past decade, organizations have raced to acquire more technology, more data, and more AI. Before long, nearly every organization will have access to the same tools.
That means AI is no longer the competitive advantage. The judgment of your people is your strategic Advantage.
"Because in a world where everyone has access to the same technology, the competitive advantage is no longer the tool; it's the thinking behind the tool."
The organizations that outperform their competitors won't simply adopt AI faster. They'll develop professionals who know how to observe market signals, prepare with purpose, validate informed points of view, and create buyer confidence through better thinking.
AI won't eliminate the gap between average and exceptional performance. It will amplify it.
Average professionals will use AI to produce more activity. Exceptional professionals will use AI to produce better judgment.
The technology will become available to everyone. Better judgment won't. That will remain the ultimate competitive advantage.
If your revenue still depends on a handful of top performers instead of a repeatable system, it may be time to evaluate the rituals driving your business.
